Solar Space Heating Systems are an effective and excellent way to reduce costly energy bills during your heating season. Solar Space Heaters work alongside home heating systems using the sun's energy to heat your home reducing your consumption of electricity, oil, propane, or other fossil fuels.

Attics and conservatories can capture many 100's of kWh's of free heat from the sun. Our Solar Space Heating system is an ultra-efficient new secondary home heating system that transfers this free heat into homes reducing the use of far more expensive alternative heating systems.

Of course solar space heating is dependent on solar heat, which is not always available, but you may be surprised at how much solar energy is collected and stored in parts of your home at all times of the year even on partly cloudy days. Because solar heat harvester systems have such low installation and running costs it is a very valid secondary home heat source which will considerably reduce home heating costs.

Two types of Solar Space Heating system have been researched, developed and tested during the last seven years. Attic Solar Space Heating Systems (ASSH) transfer solar heated attic air, or heat from the home that has warmed the attic (heat recovery) into and through the home, Conservatory Solar Space Heating Systems (CSSH) transfer free solar heated conservatory air from it's apex into and through the home.

Both our attic and conservatory solar space heating systems can use new energy saving motors which increase the system efficiency as shown in the home heating efficiency charts below. As both systems move heat around the home, home humidity levels are reduced decreasing moisture and condensation. In attic heat harvesting applications, in cool periods of the year, the system can efficiently recover heat from the home heating system that escapes into the attic transferring it back into the home.

Home attics, especially those with slate or vinyl tiled roofs, and conservatories, can get surprisingly hot (35°c to 50°c), even on partly cloudy days.

An alternative temperature and humidity monitor is the Elitech RC-5 Data USB temperature monitor. This records temperature every 'user preset' period that can be downloaded to Microsoft Excel.

Impact of space heating costs of our Attic solar space heating systems

The chart shows temperatures in a scottish home, both without (17,18 July) and with (19 to 23 July) one of our Attic Solar Space Heating systems operating.

When the attic temperature (red line) exceeds the room temperature (green line), shown by areas H, it indicates that Attic Solar Space Heating is very practical.

The blue line shows outdoor temperatures, the dotted blue line average outdoor temperatures. The impact of using heat from the attic is shown initially on July 19. The room temperature begins to rise when the system fan/blower is turned on by the custom controller. The rate of rise in attic temperature slows as the blower is running until the room temperature reaches the maximum user preset temperature, 23°c, when the blower is turned off. The attic temperature then rises rapidly as shown in the chart.

Temperatures were measured and recorded using a data logger. When operating, the average room temperature, shown by the green dashed line, increased initially by 3°c then by 4°c. The total operating cost of the system for four days was £0.27, and for the year £4.51 when 598 kWh were harvested.

The extraordinary low heat cost per kWh from our Solar Space Heating systems results because the heat is free and, in contrast to ground and air source heat pumps, the cost of transferring the heat to the home is almost negligible.
